Kala Vatana Amti Recipe – Kala Vatana Amti (Recipe In Hindi)

Kala Vatana Amti is a famous dish made in Malwan, Maharashtra. It is a spicy dish and coconut is the most important ingredient in it. Black gram is used in this but if you want, you can also use chickpea in it.  Black gram, onion, tomato, cumin powder, black pepper powder, cardamom powder, ginger garlic paste, tamarind paste, mustard seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida, green coriander, oil, salt, dried red chilli, cloves, cinnamon, star Anise, coriander seeds, fennel, khus khus, cumin, dry coconut   1 cup black gram, boiled 1 onion, finely chopped 1 tomato, finely chopped 1 teaspoon cumin powder 1/2 teaspoon black pepper powder 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste 1 teaspoon tamarind Paste of 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 sprig of curry leaves asafoetida, a pinch 4 sprigs of green coriander, finely chopped (for garnish) 1 tablespoon of oil Salt, as per taste Roast and make a paste 5 dry red chillies 4 cloves 1 cinnamon stick 1 Star anise 2 tsp Coriander seeds 1 tsp Fennel 1 tsp Khus khus 1/2 tsp Cumin 1 tbsp Dry coconut, grate     10   30     To make Kala Vatana Amti, first soak black gram overnight. Put water with gram in a pressure cooker and cook till 2 whistles. Keep it aside. Now put the ingredients to be cooked in a pan and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add some water and make a paste. Now heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and let it cook for 15 seconds. Now add onions to it and cook until they become soft. After the onion becomes soft, add ginger garlic paste to it and let it cook for 2 minutes. Now add tomatoes to it and cook until tomatoes become soft. After the tomatoes become soft, add cumin powder, black pepper powder and cardamom powder. Mix and let it cook for 1 minute. Now add boiled gram in it and let it cook for 2 minutes. Add some ground mixture and water as per requirement. Add tamarind paste, salt and let it cook for 10 minutes. Now turn off the gas and garnish with green coriander. Serve Kala Vatana Amti with Bundi Raita and Methi Thepla for lunch.
